Ironbridge Power Station and Telford New Town
Ironbridge Power Station and Telford New Town Tour
Saturday October 3, 2015 - Fully Booked
Members £30, Non Members £35
We meet at Telford Central Station (trains from London and Birmingham arrive at 9.00 and 9.51am: paid parking available) for a 10am start.
This tour presents members and non-members with a great chance to look in detail at some significant developments in the West Midlands as well as an in depth examination of a progressive approach to industral design.
After meeting at Telford Central Station a coach will take us by the scenic route to Ironbridge Power Station. The station is situated near the Ironbridge Gorge world heritage site where the industrial revolution began. There we will enjoy a unique opportunity to see this 1960s project which was designed to blend into the natural background. The concrete cooling towers are of particular note having had a red pigment added to mimic the surrounding colours. Our two hour tour will be followed by a buffet lunch (included in ticket price) at Cherry's Cafe in Station Road, Coalbrookdale.
Next stop is Sutton Hill, Telford for a short walk around the original Rayburn council housing, then on via the Halesfield industrial estate to the town centre and library/town park where we will stop for afternoon tea.
Then (tbc) either a visit to the library for a talk on the development of the new town and the buildings and derelict pit scape it replaced or a visit to the 1980s private development at Priorslee before returning to the station for 17.30pm
This event will be popular so please book early to ensure your place.
Former Telford planner Martin White and C20 West Midlands member Lou Robson will be providing commentary and notes.
Price £30 for members, £35 for non members (includes coach travel, buffet lunch and notes).
