Harlow Sculpture by Coach
Sunday 6th March 2016 - Harlow Sculpture by Coach
The Harlow Art Trust was founded in 1953 to acquire sculpture and murals for the new town, itself founded only in 1947. Henry Moore made an important early donation and other works came from the Festival of Britain. But it was in the commissioning and acquisition of works by young sculptors that the Trust excelled in its early years, the forte of its youngest trustee, Patricia Fox-Edwards, later Lady Gibberd, who sought out Elisabeth Frink, Reg Brown and others. The sculpture is spread across the town, and we shall visit housing estates and small shopping centres as well as the town centre. The tour will end at the Gibberd Garden, where the collection assembled by Sir Frederick and Lady Gibberd complements that in the town. The tour will be led by Elain Harwood of Historic England.
Meet at 11am at Harlow Town station
The coach tour includes tea and cake as well as admission to the Gibberd Garden, to which we have a privileged sole access. There will be a stop for lunch (find your own) in the town centre. We will return to Harlow Town station before 5.30.
