Harlow Sculpture by Cycle
Sunday 17th April 2016 - Harlow Sculpture by Cycle
The Harlow Art Trust was founded in 1953 to acquire sculpture and murals for the new town, itself founded only in 1947. Henry Moore made an important early donation and other works came from the Festival of Britain. But it was in the commissioning and acquisition of works by young sculptors that the Trust excelled in its early years, the forte of its youngest trustee, Patricia Fox-Edwards, later Lady Gibberd, who sought out Elisabeth Frink, Reg Brown and others. The sculpture is spread across the town, and we shall visit housing estates and small shopping centres as well as the town centre. The tour will end at the Gibberd Garden, where the collection assembled by Sir Frederick and Lady Gibberd complements that in the town. The tour will be led by Elain Harwood of Historic England.
Meet at 11am at Harlow Town station
The cycle tour will comprise two rides of c.2 hours each, mainly on dedicated cycle tracks and with frequent stops, with a lunch break in the Town Centre. We will end at the Gibberd Garden. The tour includes admission to the garden only: participants can chose their own refreshments from the café there as a greater variety will be on offer – and you will have earned your tea! There is a quiet ride through the park back to Harlow Town Station for a train c.5.45 or participants can board trains at Harlow Mill. Please note that cycles are not allowed on Stansted Express services, and there will be an update on services once January’s engineering works are completed
