Tour of 55 Broadway- partner event to Mavericks Exhibition at RA
Tour of 55, Broadway by Edmund Bird, London Heritage Advisor with TfL
Friday March 4th from 3pm. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes
This event is fully booked
55 Broadway is described by Historic England as ‘arguably Charles Holden’s best building’ and is a milestone in Twentieth Century architecture, greatly influenced by the latest American building design of the 1920s. Holden went on to design the London Underground’s most outstanding 1930s tube stations on the Piccadilly line and the monumental Senate House for the University of London. 55 Broadway was the tallest commercial building in London when it was completed in 1929 – an early example of a high-rise steel-framed office tower. It is listed Grade I by virtue of its historic and architectural importance and by its high degree of intactness – little changed since its completion, retaining most of its original interiors of travertine and bronze.
This listed landmark now has planning consent for conversion to luxury residential flats replacing its current function so future opportunities to admire its grand interiors will be limited. The tour will include an appraisal of its exterior and the outstanding sculpture by leading artists of the mid 20th century including Henry Moore, Jacob Epstein and Eric Gill followed by a visit to its principle interiors and rooftop gardens.
The Tour will last 90 mins - including the visit to the flagpole terrace at the top of the tower which is dependent on weather conditions. Illustrated handouts will be distributed on the day.
COST: Members £20.00 Non Members £25.00
