100 Years of De Stijl
100 Years of De Stijl - 8th September 2017 to 10th September 2017
Based in Rotterdam, this tour celebrates the centenary of the De Stijl movement. As well as seeing houses by Rietveld Schroder in Utrecht, we will see work by Dudok, Berlage and van der Vlugt, and some more modern buildings along the way.
Starting at 10am on Friday morning in Rotterdam swe will visit the Technical University of Delft to hear an introductory talk by Marie-Thérèse van Thoor, who led the recent conservation of the Rietveld Schroder House. We will then travel on The Hague to see ‘Architecture & Interiors: The Desire for Style’ at Berlage’s Gemeentemuseum, followed by a walking tour to see C20 buildings, including the Hague City Hall by Richard Meier and John Outram's ‘Candy Drum'. The day will end with a group dinner - included in the price - at Dudok brasserie in Rotterdam.
On Saturday morning we take the train to Utrecht to see the Rietveld Schröder House, as well as Gerrit Rietveld’s Erasmuslaan 5 nearby and Dudok’s Municipal Theatre (1941), as well as more recent buildings such as Utrecht City Hall designed by EMBT. In the afternoon we hope to visit Hilversum to see Dudok’s town hall and the sanatorium Zonnestraal.
Sunday will be spent in Rotterdam with an itinerary that includes the Lijnbaan centre (1951, Broek en Bakema; the first pedestrian shopping mall), Breuer’s de Bijenkorf department store, the Van Nelle Factory, Sonneveld House, OMA’s Kunsthal and an architectural tour of Boijmans van Beuningen. The trip will finish at 16.30 on Sunday.
Please note that the exact programme is still subject to change. The trip will largely be on foot or on the excellent public transport system (partly to avoid the notorious traffic jams), so there will be a great deal of walking and hopping on and off trams and trains. Tram and train travel is also included in the price of the event.
