Sketching the South Bank Walk

Sketching the South Bank Walk

Saturday 29 June 2024

Start time/place: 10am/Royal Festival Hall, southeast entrance facing outdoor food market

Finish time/place: 12pm/National Theatre cafe

Join us for an informal walk led by Carlos Finlay around London’s South Bank, sketching some of its most iconic examples of post-war architecture. The walk will involve short stops at each building, followed by sketching breaks where attendees are encouraged to treat the event like an ‘architectural life-drawing’ class.

Key landmarks will include elements of the Southbank Centre, like the Royal Festival Hall (Robert Matthew and Leslie Martin, 1951) Grade I listed, the Hayward Gallery (Norman Engleback et al, 1968), and the National Theatre (Denys Lasdun, 1976) Grade II* listed, learning about their history and construction, but also taking the opportunity to understand their built form through pencil, pen and paper.

This walk is aimed at anyone, with no expected level of artistic ability. Students are particularly encouraged. A pen, pencil, graphite stick, and A5 sketchbook will be provided, but attendees are also welcome to bring their own materials.

Carlos Finlay is a Heritage Consultant at Alan Baxter and a C20 Society volunteer.
