A Weekend on the English Riviera - Mervyn Seal in Devon and Dartington Hall 19/20th March 2016

 A tour by coach looking at the work of Mervyn Seal in the Torbay area of South Devon, including his distinctive ‘butterfly roof’ houses of the 1960s and the award winning Oaklands Park in Dawlish. Seal’s work is featured in the recent Society Journal ‘Houses, Regional Practice and Local Character’ in an article written by Jon Wright, who will lead our tour. Mervyn Seal himself will join us for part of the weekend.

On the Sunday we will look at pre-war work in Paignton by Swiss born architect William Lescaze and then at Dartington Hall where we will view the Grade II listed gardens with sculpture by Willi Soukoup and Henry Moore.

Saturday commencing at 11.30am at Exeter St. Davids Station, with a coach to visit the following work by Mervyn Seal: In Exeter Stoke Hill, then in Dawlish Oaklands Park, then on to Brixham to view Marina Court/Park Court/Marina House, Heath Court & Parkham Wood House. In the late afternoon we visit Kingswear and Seal’s former home, Kaywana Hall, for an early evening reception. Weekend accommodation is available at Kaywana Hall, now run as a B&B (minimum 2 night stay). The coach will then go to the Torquay hotel before returning to Exeter St Davids station.

Sunday Commencing at 9.30am in Torquay to view: Paignton – Rock Close and Broadsands Road (William Lescaze) Dartington - Dartington Hall & Gardens and Barn Cinema, High Cross House and various estate buildings by Lescaze. Return to Exeter by coach to meet 5pm London train.
