IN PERSON: Spring Lecture Series 2024: Twentieth Century Shops: From Arndale to Zara COMPLETE SERIES

Thursdays from 1 February to 7 March at 6.30 pm

The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6E

The complete series of the hybrid Spring Lectures for 2023 which will focus on Twentieth Century Shops.

Marking the publication of 100 20th-Century Shops, the spring lecture series explores the vibrant glory of shop design. Our shops reflect both social and architectural changes during the century. The independent shops, co-operatives and department stores that once anchored our high streets have given way to supermarkets, chain stores and shopping centres, often drawing people away from town centres. Speakers will discuss some of the most inspiring and important retail architecture of the century and prompt consideration of how these once-loved buildings can be protected and re-purposed in the age of austerity and internet shopping.

Lectures will include:

1 February: The Decorum of Shopping Streets by Alan Powers

8 February: Department Stores by Matthew Whitfield

15 February: The Twentieth Century Boutique by Bronwen Edwards

22 February: Supermarkets by Alistair Fair

29 February: Shopping Centres by Ellie Brown

7 March: Vitrolite Shopfronts by Katriona Byrne
