Learning from Lubetkin Lecture

Presented by John Allan

Monday 12 February 2024 at 18:30

The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London, EC1M 6EJ

In this lecture John Allan, author of the latest C20 monograph on Berthold Lubetkin  (1901-1990) in the series Twentieth Century Architects, will discuss the life and work of the architect.

Lubetkin and his Tecton partnership dominated the development of modern architecture in Britain in the 1930s and beyond. John will stress the importance of Lubetkin’s formative years in Russia and Europe, and the ease with which he established his practice and its vital early connections. The talk will analyse key aspects of Lubetkin’s major works including selected zoo projects, the Highpoint apartments and Finsbury Health Centre before assessing the post-war housing schemes in Finsbury and Bethnal Green and the urban planning concepts underpinning Lubetkin’s later output. A close friend of Lubetkin for twenty years, Allan will seek to convey a sense of the architect’s mercurial personality and underlying design convictions.

John Allan is an architect and writer who became a close personal friend of Lubetkin for 20 years.  John was a director of Avanti Architects from 1983-2011, was instrumental in creating the Isokon Gallery in Hampstead and is chairman of the Isokon Gallery Trust.
