Twentieth Century Shops Lecture Series 5: Shopping Centres

Thursday 29 February at 6.30 pm

The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London, EC1M 6EJ

The fifth lecture in the series Twentieth Century Shops: From Arndale to Zara, marking the publication of 100 20th Century Shops.

As a much-maligned building type, post-war shopping centres have undoubtedly played a significant role in Britain, with over 750 shopping centres built from the end of the war to the present day. This talk follows a three-month placement undertaken with the Twentieth Century Society in 2023. It will share the findings of the research project (also published as a report by the society in early 2024), which included around 40 visits made to shopping centres, from post-war shopping precincts to vast out-of-town malls. At a time when the future of shopping centres looks uncertain – with many slated for demolition – this talk considers what should be done next.

Ellie Brown is a writer and PhD student at the University of Warwick, researching post-war shopping centre architecture.
