Ipswich Sacred and Secular Tour
Saturday 23 September 2023
Start time/place: 10.00/Manningtree Station
Finish time/place: 17.00/Manningtree Station
Alan Powers will lead a coach tour of five churches around Ipswich with features of twentieth century interest, which provide the core of the day. The churches include the work of architects of national fame, Cachemaille-Day and George Pace, and a local hero, Birkin Haward.
At Barham we will see Henry Moore’s ‘Madonna and Child’ (1948-9), similar to his earlier Northampton piece, is little known (maybe they like to keep it that way), and is in one of Suffolk’s many fascinating historic country churches.
We will be visiting the wonderful Broomhill Open Air Pool, Ipswich (1938) listed grade II which is still awaiting re-opening. A member of the ‘Save Broomhill Pool’ campaign will give us an update on progress and a tour of the pool.
In addition, after lunch in the town centre at a 1937 pub , we will have an outside view of Foster’s ‘Willis Building’, 1975, and pop into the fabulous 17th century Unitarian church. Also on the route, the 1956 Ipswich Co-op ‘Harvest’ mosaic mural recently listed grade II with support from C20.
