The Palm Springs of Portugal Tour - SOLD OUT
Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 May 2024
Start time/place: 7 pm/Aeromar Hotel, Praia de Faro
Finish time/place: 1pm/Aeromar Hotel, Praia de Faro
A three-day tour led by Richard Walker will visit the Art Deco and mid-century modern architecture of Faro, Faro beach and neighbouring Olhão. The tour will include local towns and beach community and mainly walking.
Thursday evening, the tour will start 7 pm at the 1970s Hotel Aeromar on Faro Island overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. We will be greeted with an introductory talk by Richard Walker. You will then have the freedom to dine in the hotel or nearby local restaurants.
Friday morning, we will take the half-hour ferry (cost not included) across the Ria Formosa lagoon. We will have a walking tour of Faro Town seeing Art Deco architecture followed by the incredible number of mid-century modern buildings which are mainly the work of the celebrated Algarve modernist architect Manuel Gomes de Costa (1921-2016). We will also be visiting interiors together with talks by architects, residents, enthusiasts, and experts.
Saturday morning will start early in Faro with a 10-minute train ride (cost not included) to the neighbouring town of Olhão, originally called Cubist Town, because of the whitewashed Moorish architecture, where there is a quayside market and more unique buildings to see. After lunch, there’ll be more visits in Faro town, before we head back to the island and the hotel for the evening cocktails and buffet event (cost not included).
Sunday morning will be a walk ‘From Bauhaus to beach house’ looking at the modernist architecture on Faro Beach. The tour will end at 1 pm, after which members are free to have a relaxing afternoon with a choice of sunbathing, walking or exploring the extraordinary landscape and 10-mile sandy beach.
Richard Walker is an artist and resident of Metro Central Heights and Faro.
He has previously led several visits for the Society.
