Wednesday 23 October – Introduction to Barcelona and pre-tour briefing.
Thursday 24 October – A walking tour of the city, beginning with the art-deco Francia railway station, then the publishing house Gustavo Gili, a pioneering 1950s building, followed by Sert’s 1930s anti-TB clinic; lunching at a 1929 art-nouveau restaurant, and finishing at the Enric Miralles Foundation and Benedetta Tagliabue’s offices (2011). The day will end with a dinner at Café de l’Arquitecte (included).
Friday 25 October – we travel by coach to the 1962 seaside Casa Gomis and thence to Ricardo Bofill’s 1970s offices in a spectacular former cement factory, La Fabrica. The afternoon’s highlight is the (reconstructed) Republic Pavilion, originally designed for the 1937 Paris exhibition by Sert, where Picasso’s Guernica and Calder’s mercury fountain first featured.
Saturday 26 October – includes the Sert-designed Joan Miró Foundation (1975) with a panoramic view over the city from Montjuic, followed by a visit to one of the most important buildings of the twentieth century, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion (1929, reconstructed 1986).
