‘Fresh Air and Fun’ – Blackpool and Fylde Coast Tour

Saturday 14 to Sunday 15 September 2024

(Please note that the date has changed since this was originally advertised)

Start time/place: 9.45am/Blackpool Tourist Information (FY1 1AP)

Finish time/place: 4.45pm/Blackpool North Station (FY1 2AB)

Join Andrew Jackson for an illuminating weekend tour of Blackpool and the Fylde Coast, including Fleetwood and Lytham St Annes.

Friday afternoon will feature an optional tour of Blackpool Winter Gardens at 4pm, including the famous Opera House (Charles Mackeith, 1938-9).

Saturday will begin with a tour of Blackpool town centre, before taking the tram along the North Shore to Bispham via St Stephen on the Cliffs with its Actors’ Chapel of 1928 (recently illuminated thanks to a gift in Ken Dodd’s will) and stained glass by Harry Stammers. Lunch will be followed by a short stroll to the former Bispham Branch Library (J. C. Robinson, 1938) and then it will be back on the tram to Fleetwood and the recently listed St Nicholas's Church (Lawrence King, 1960-2). An evening walk along the cliffs will take in the famous animated tableaux, a major part of the Blackpool Illuminations since 1932.

Sunday will start with a suburban coach tour, ahead of lunch in Stanley Park (Thomas Mawson, 1926) and a look at Our Lady of Lourdes Thanksgiving Shrine (F. X. Velarde, 1955-7). In the afternoon, the coach will head south to St Christopher's Church (Francis Roberts, 1989), then onward to Lytham St Annes and Fairhaven United Reformed Church of 1912. The return journey to Blackpool will feature a stop at the Pleasure Beach and its famous Casino (Joseph Emberton, 1939).

Andrew Jackson is a Trustee of C20 Society and Civic Voice. He last led a visit to Blackpool in 2022 with the late Elain Harwood. All profits from this event will go to the Elain Harwood Memorial Fund.
