Peter Elborn together with Ana Šverko, architect and architectural historian, will lead a tour of the twentieth century architecture of Split, a World Heritage Site. The tour will include significant examples of C20 Croatian architecture.
Friday 4 October An introductory early evening walking tour of Diocletian’s Palace including reference to ongoing building within the Palace and the influence of its architecture on Croatian architects.
Saturday 5 October An all day tour starting 9am at Zrinsko-Frankopanska Street, following the line of Roman centuriation, representing a straight line cutting through the 20th-century architecture. The walk includes social housing in Poljud (Dinko Vesanović, Zlatibor Lukšić, 1949), an apartment building in Emanuel Vidovic Park (Lovro Perković, 1956), a residential complex in Glavičine (Stanko Fabris, 1960-1965), high-rise apartment blocks in Spinut (Ivo Vitić, 1968) and (Ivo Radić, 1968), ‘The Great Wall of China’ housing blocks and housing complex in Poljud (Frano Gotovac, 1970-1980), and the City Stadium in Poljud (Boris Magaš, 1979). Dinner at the Apetit in Split old town (included).
Sunday 6 October Morning - Starting at 9am a tour of the eastern part of the city, with a focus on the Split 3 district (urbanists Vladimir Mušič, Marjan Bežan, and Nives Starc, 1969). Afternoon - A tour of the eastern shore of Split’s harbour to the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments (Mladen Kauzlaric, 1976) and the Mestrovic Gallery (Ivan Mestrovic, 1931 - 1939).
Peter Elborn had a career in the British Council that included five years living and working in Croatia. He now lives in London and on the island of Hvar, and organises events for the British-Croatian Society.
Ana Šverko is an architect and architecture historian, and a Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Art History, Cvito Fisković Center, in Split since 2011. Her research focuses on the architectural history of the Eastern Adriatic coast in a cross-cultural context.
