Finish time/place: 1 pm/Vanbrugh Castle, Maze Hill, SE10
Ana Sutherland will lead a walk looking at buildings, by Trevor Dannat, Brian Meeking, Julian Sofaer, Gordon and Ursula Bowyer, and James Gowan. She will explain their origins, connections between their architects, clients, and the area.
The tour route starts in Point Hill on the west side of Greenwich Park and ends on the east side, on top of Maze Hill. We will walk towards the river and along the base of the park and Queen’s House.
Key buildings will be: Meridian West (Julian Sofaer, 1965), Hyde Vale (Robin Simpson, 1960s), Westgrove Lane (Leo Rubinstein and Michael Hohmann, 1960s), Greenwich Building Society (Trevor Dannatt, 1958 and 1974) Vanbrugh Castle conversion (Ursula Bowyer, 1977) and Greenwich Theatre (Brian Meeking 1969).
Ana Sutherland is a practicing architect based in Blackheath. Her book Modern Buildings in Blackheath and Greenwich 1950-2000 was published this summer. She is the leader of the Blackheath Society, Architecture Group and organises tours in the area for Open City.
