Haggerston School, Hackney - Erno Goldfinger for the London County Council (1964-67)

Book Launch Party for Ernö Goldfinger by Elain Harwood and Alan Powers

Tuesday 10 September 2024 at 6pm

Haggerston School, Weymouth Terrace, London E2 8LS (courtesy of Haggerston School). The school is a short distance from Hoxton station on the Overground.

To celebrate the recent publication of Ernö Goldfinger - the 25th volume in our Twentieth Century Architects Series - and in aid of the Elain Harwood Memorial Fund, this very special evening hosted at Goldfinger's Haggerston School, will see talks by Alan Powers, Hugh Pearman, and Catherine Croft, with tours of the building with Fiona Lamb (Avanti Architects).

Haggerston School (Listed Grade II) was the last of Goldfinger’s three London school buildings, 1961-67.

‘The assembly block must rank among his grandest  buildings, notably for the entrance hall with its hard finishes, coffered ceiling, framed doors and notice boards, and a corner staircase that makes a continuous form with the balcony it serves. Avanti Architects refurbished the school in 2011-12, improving thermal performance, extending the fourth floor of the teaching block and adding a sixth-form block for what is now a co-educational school.’ (Elain Harwood)
