Technology comes to Town: Michael Hopkins in London Tour
Saturday 28 September 2024
Start time/place: 10am/Hopkins Office, 27 Broadley Terrace, NW1 6LG
Finish time/place: 5pm/near to Farringdon Station
A day tour in London to celebrate the work of Sir Michael Hopkins (1935-2023), Patty Hopkins and their practice. Led by Alan Powers with commentary from members of the Hopkins team and privileged access to buildings, this will be a memorable day.
Hopkins Architects has contributed many significant buildings to London over the course of more than 40 years, starting with the Hopkins House in Hampstead (1980) and their office (1984) which used their proprietary Patera construction system. Both buildings are still in their original use and will be visited.
At Lord’s Cricket Ground, his Mound Stand (1987) combined a typical high-tech stretched fabric canopy with a pragmatic adoption of arched brickwork, extending the existing base of the stand. This set the direction for the insertions to the 1950s classical Bracken House (1992) in the City, with its display of varied materials. In addition, we will visit the Gibbs Building for Wellcome Trust on Euston Road (2004) and Portcullis House (1999), finishing with the Haberdashers’ Hall in the City (2002).
Alan Powers is a former Chairman of C20 Society and a current trustee. He teaches at London School of Architecture, New York University in London and the University of Kent.
The tour will be by coach (included), tube (tickets not included) and foot.
