Zoom: British Housing Crisis Lecture Series: 5. 8,000 Mile Island and Other Stories
Autumn Lecture Series: Green Belt, Grey Belt and Brownfield: How the British housing crisis happened, and how to get over it:
5. 8,000 Mile Island and Other Stories
Thursday 21 November 2024 at 6.30pm
Online
Peter Barber’s ‘8,000-Mile Island’, launched in the Architects’ Journal in July 2024, encompasses the notion of a countrywide aquacultural and maritime industrial revolution that would see a ribbon of tidal barrages, offshore wind farms, giant floating tidal turbines, and deep-sea fish and seaweed farms, tracing our coastline from the Orkney Islands to the Isle of Wight and back. Such a project would bring renewed prosperity to our decaying, depopulated coastal towns and cities. Peter Barber also offers a vision of a food and energy self-sufficient UK and an end to the housing crisis.
Peter Barber Architects was established in 1989 in studios built by the practice on a canal side wharf in the East End of London. In 2002 the practice moved to a grade II listed Victorian print works in King's Cross, which it has refurbished. In October 2001 the practice’s Donnybrook Urban Quarter won first prize in the Architecture Foundation's prestigious Innovations in Housing Competition and it has contributed a growing number of acclaimed housing projects to London for clients such as St Mungo's Community Housing Association, Circle 33 Housing Group, East Thames Housing Group and The London Boroughs of Newham, Enfield, Greenwich, Camden and Barking.
