IN PERSON: Spring Lecture Series 2025: Great Exhibitions of the Twentieth Century - COMPLETE SERIES

Thursdays from 30 January to 27 February and Friday 7 March at 6.30pm

The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EJ

The series will explore contrasting pre-war and post-war exhibitions from Wembley to its antitype, The Millennium Dome, preceded by a general reflection of what these exhibitions might mean to us now.

With the recent centenary of the British Empire Exhibition of 2024 and its very different successor, the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs Industrielles et Modernes in Paris in 1925, it is timely to think again about the continuation of these nineteenth century practices into the modern age. The speakers will explore contrasting pre-war and post-war exhibitions from Wembley to its antitype, The Millennium Dome, preceded by a general reflection of what these exhibitions might mean to us now.

Lectures will include:

Thursday 30 January: 1. Ephemeral Vistas Revisited, Paul Greenhalgh

Thursday 6 February: 2. Wembley 1924: The World’s First Concrete City, Kathryn Ferry

Thursday 13 February: 3. Expo 67 and its (Laurentian) World, Craig Moyes

Thursday 20 February: 4. Batting for Britain: national representation in international exhibitions, 1900 to 1992, Alan Powers

Thursday 27 February: 5. Dancing on the Volcano: Decoration at The Paris 1925 and 1937 Expositions, Leslie Klingner
