In person: Brazil Builds! Brazilian Modernism Lecture
Brazil Builds! Brazilian Modernism Lecture
Monday 7 April 2025 at 6.30pm
The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London, EC1M 6EJ
Linked to the Royal Academy exhibition, Brasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism, Valeria Carullo will give an illustrated talk on Brazil Builds (1943), illustrated by the photographs of the great G E Kidder Smith.
In 1943 the Museum of Modern Art in New York staged a pioneering exhibition on Brazilian architecture, titled Brazil Builds: Architecture New and Old 1652-1942. The arresting images on display were by the young American architectural historian and photographer extraordinaire George Everard Kidder Smith (1913-1997).
The exhibition introduced, perhaps for the first time, Brazilian modernism to an American audience, and its catalogue – the subject of this talk – was to become the template for a series of seminal books on modernism in various other countries developed in the 1950s by Kidder Smith for the Architectural Press in London.
Valeria Carullo is Curator of The Robert Elwall Photographs Collection at the RIBA British Architectural Library.
