William Mitchell Birmingham Murals Walking Tour
Saturday 20 September 2025
Start time/place: 3pm start meeting at the junction of Icknield Street and Heaton Street
Finish time/place: 4.30pm at Hockley Circus/Hockley Flyover
Join us on this walking tour as part of Birmingham Heritage Week to explore the William Mitchell murals in the sunken concourse beneath Hockley Flyover. The murals are a superb example of surviving twentieth century public art incorporated into transport infrastructure. Bertram Wearing, designed the flyover in the 1960s to relieve local traffic congestion. William Mitchell, a sculptor was commissioned to design three murals, the details of which include abstract patterns in relief form, geometric, sunburst and motifs completed from cast pigmented concrete.
Katriona Byrne is the Deputy Head of the School of Architecture and Design at Birmingham City University (BCU).
