Manchester City Centre and Salford Quays Tour

Friday 10 to Sunday 12 October 2025

Start time/place: 5pm/The Modernist, 58 Port Street (M1 2EQ)

Finish time/place: 5pm/Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink Station (M3 4LG)

Friday 10 October in the evening will see the Modernist Society open their Port Street gallery and shop for a private drinks reception, where there will be an opportunity to view the 'Concrete at War' exhibition and browse a curated selection of books.

Saturday 11 October begins by meeting beneath the tiled map (1909) of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway at Victoria Station, ahead of a full-day walking tour of the city centre. Highlights include the recently listed Renold Building (Cruikshank & Seward, 1960-62), the Express Building (Sir Owen Williams, 1936-39), Oxford Road Station (Max Clendinning, 1958-60), and Royal Exchange Theatre (Levitt Bernstein Associates, 1976). A buffet lunch will be provided at Gateway House (Richard Seifert & Partners, 1969).

Sunday 12 October starts with a look at William Mitchell’s multi-level staircase mural (1965) at the Piccadilly Hotel, before boarding the Metrolink for a tramway excursion to Salford Quays and visits to the Imperial War Museum North (Daniel Libeskind, 1997-2002) and Lowry (James Stirling Michael Wilford & Associates, 1991-2000), which officially turns 25 on the day. In honour of this milestone, a celebratory three-course lunch will be provided at the Lowry Restaurant. A trip to the nearby Trafford Centre (Chapman Taylor, 1993-98) will take up the remainder of the afternoon.

Note: Be sure to book hotel accommodation early, as the Manchester Half Marathon takes place on 12 October. The event won’t affect our Sunday programme.
