[online] Buildings for Sport & Leisure Lecture Series: 4. FaulknerBrowns' Leisure Centres by Mike Hall

Thursday 13 November 2025 at 6.30pm – 8pm

FaulknerBrowns is an international design studio, founded in 1962, that became known for creating innovative and exciting sports venues and leisure centres. Partner Mike Hall will talk about buildings including the Walker Activity Dome (1965), Bletchley Leisure Centre (1974) whose success spurred the English Sports Council to add leisure to its remit, the Doncaster Dome (1989) which was listed in 2023, Perth Leisure Centre (1988) and Xscape in Milton Keynes (2000). He will also talk about their work at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, and his approach to sustainability in sports buildings.

Mike Hall is an architect and partner at FaulknerBrowns and leads on their sports work, including elite, competition and training venues as well as community sports and leisure projects. He works closely with sports governing bodies, and has developed a particular specialism in velodromes, as well as aquatic and ice facilities. He speaks regularly about sustainable design in sport.

The evening will also serve as the book launch of C20's new publication '100 Twentieth Century Sports and Leisure Buildings' (Twentieth Century Society/Batsford, 2025).
