[online] Buildings for Sport & Leisure: 6. The Social Role of Sports Buildings in Wales, Josh Jones

Thursday 26 November 2025 at 6.30pm – 8pm

Wales is well-known for its sporting prowess on the rugby field, and the atmospheric Millennium Stadium in Cardiff has become a new symbol of Welsh pride. However the role of sport and sports buildings in Wales is not just about elite sport in high-profile venues. Joshua Jones has researched open-air pools in the coalfields of South Wales and he brings the insights he gained from this to discussing the wider social role of Welsh sports buildings, as well as highlighting some of the buildings which C20 Cymru have succeeded in getting listed such as Plas Menai National Watersports Centre, and Wrexham Waterworld.

Josh Jones is a London-based architect with a keen interest in architectural historiography, oral history, and the spatial histories of lost buildings. His previous research explored how memory, rumour, and the spoken word of the everyday user can help re-construct the spatial narratives and social world of the heritage buildings. He has conducted primary research on the social importance of open-air pools in the coalfields of South Wales. He is a member of C20 Cymru.
