Start time/place: 2pm/Gustav Adolfs torg, Malmö

If you’ve seen Malmö, you’ve seen the world.” From the birth of the Modern movement to the new Millennium, this tour led by Cy Sun traces the trajectory of 20th-century Swedish architecture through the microcosm of Malmö.

In Malmö, we will explore different typologies from housing to places of worship including: Kronprinsen (Thorsten Roos and Kurt Hultin, 1959-64); the Ribershus (David Helldén and Stig Dranger among others, 1938); Friluftstaden (Eric Sigfrid Persson, 1942-44) housing exhibition sites; the Eastern Cemetery (Sigurd Lewerentz, 1916-69); Malmö Opera (Lewerentz, Lallerstedt and Helldén, 1944); the churches of St Andreas (Thorsten Roos and Bror Thornberg, 1959) and St Matteus (Sten Samuelson, 1983); and Bo01 (various architects, 2001) and Varvsstaden (various architects, 2021-ongoing) at the Western Harbour will offer a glimpse of Malmö’s future.

We will also visit an array of internationally significant buildings on a day trip around northwestern Skåne. Highlights will include the LTH campus (Klas Anshelm, 1960-69); Planetstaden (Jørn Utzon with Erik and Henry Andersson, 1957-58); Eslöv Civic Hall (Hans Asplund, 1955-57); St Peter’s Church, Klippan (Sigurd Lewerentz, 1966); and Esperanza (Ralph Erskine, 1963-70).
