[online] Chandigarh : 60 years after Le Corbusier  Lecture

Monday 23 February at 6.30pm – 8pm

In August 1965, Le Corbusier died on his daily swim in the Mediterranean. His cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, packed his bags in Chandigarh to fly home to attend to his cousin’s funeral. That was the end of the involvement in the city of the international group of architects who had started the project at the beginning of the 1950s.

Sixty years later the city has one of the highest per capita incomes and ranks amongst the highest Human Development Index among all Indian states and territories. In 2015, a survey by LG Electronics ranked it as the happiest city in India.

Now a Chandigarh regular, Ian explores whether this extraordinary experiment to bring secular modernism to a dusty plain northwest of the capital Delhi has been a success. He looks at some of the problems it will face as it balances conservation with pressure for new development.

Ian Macready, after more than 30 years working in the London design industry, he now operates small group tours to India.
