Visit to the newly-listed St Chad’s, Birmingham

Saturday 28 February at 2.00pm – 4pm

St Chad’s Church, 160 New Road, Rubery, Birmingham B45 9JA

A visit to celebrate the listing at Grade II of St Chads,  in Rubery, Birmingham. This beautiful church was built 1956-60 to designs by Lavender, Twentyman and Percy architects with sculpture by Geoffrey Clarke.

The church combines Scandinavian simplicity with English tradition in a light-filled and joyous space. It is one of the finest surviving works by Richard Twentyman, a Midlands-based architect, whose work from the 1930s-70s is gaining greater recognition and attracting listing. For background on the practice see C20 Journal 15: Holy Houses pp 94-109. It is the first building in the suburb of Rubery to be listed and is a much-loved and very active place.

Claire Turner is the vicar at St Chad’s and supported the listing application submitted by Elizabeth Thompson, a heritage expert employed by the Birmingham Diocese.

Aidan Ridyard, architect, and Chris Kennedy, academic, are experts on Twentyman, co-authoring The Church Architecture of Richard Twentyman; Forest of Arden Press, 2023.

Katriona Byrne is a Senior Lecturer in Conservation at Birmingham City University.
