76 Southbank guided tour, 6pm—7pm
Tuesday 18 August
76 Upper Ground, London, SE1 9PZ
Please note we have two times slots: 4:30pm—5:30pm and 6pm—7pm.
Join us on an exclusive tour of Grade II listed 76 Southbank, which reopened earlier this year after an extensive renovation by AHMM and is now a home to Lego and Paypal. It featured prominently in the latest C20 Magazine as a ‘Conservation case study’.
The former IBM building was designed by Denys Lasdun, the architect of the neighbouring Grade II* listed National Theatre. It first opened in 1984 as a prominently placed, glamorous marketing centre for the fast-growing US firm, which had a track record for commissioning good new architecture.
In 2019 AHMM won a competition to undertake comprehensive refurbishment. One of the major challenges was the car-centric access, where visitors would drive up a ramp to a reception on the first floor. AHMM demolished the ramp and shifted the reception to the ground floor, creating a glazed colonnade framed by impressive concrete columns that still bear marks of the ramp.
The building was originally only single glazed and poorly insulated, with traditional gas and oil- red heating and cooling. Double glazing, air source heat pumps and more than 175 solar panels have made huge improvements to environmental performance (a decrease in operational carbon of 70 per cent) and the overall sustainability credentials of the project have been reinforced by recycling of materials removed from site, and use of reclaimed elements in the new construction.
The tour will be led by architect Stefan Rust, Associate Director at Allford Hall Monaghan Morris
The capacity is limited to 13 people, members only.
