The London Archives: Exploration
The London Archives: Exploration
Friday 25 September 2026
1pm–approx. 4pm
40 Northampton Road, EC1R 0HB
Join us in a visit to The London Archives in Clerkenwell led by Claire Titley. The archive holds over 72 miles (116 km) of historical treasures, with the earliest document dating back to 1067. It contains many gems documenting modern London such as Billy Butlin's plans for the Post Office Tower restaurant.
We’ll get a behind the scenes tour of the building, demonstrating some of the largest strongrooms and highlighting the architectural features of the partly purpose-built building, converted in the 1990s from the Temple Press site.
There will be a visit to the conservation studio and an opportunity to see and discuss the work archivists do to preserve London’s archival heritage with our Collections Care team. The visit will also include an exclusive document display, presenting some of the highlights of the 20. century architectural archives.
Following the event the participants will be encouraged to continue to the Marian Anderson pub favoured by the archivist and located just around the corner.
Claire Titley is an archivist who specialises in public engagement and who has an interest in London’s local authority archives.
