[online] 21st Century Architecture: HOUSING Phil Hamilton (Peter Barber Architects) and David Mikhail (Mikhail Riches)

Thursday 12 November 2026 at 6:30pm—7:45pm

Learn more about some of the best 21st-century architecture from the people who made it happen. We’ve paired leading architects and academics for themed lectures where they will present their work, before sitting down to discuss their individual approaches to similar projects.

Britain might have notoriously low quality of new built homes, but there are architects and enlightened clients committed to improving the standards and with that people’s lives. We’ll hear from two of them.

David Mikhail of Mikhail Riches will present the Stirling Prize-winning Goldsmith Street scheme they designed with Cathy Hawley. In 2019 it became the only social-housing scheme ever to win the coveted annual award, given to the UK's best new building. The 105 low-energy council homes were delivered for Norwich City Council.

Phil Hamilton of Peter Barber Architects will present Donnybrook Quarters in Tower Hamlets and Edgewood Mews in Barnet – two highlights from their award-winning portfolio of radical and innovative housing developments the practice delivered for housing associations, councils and charities.

David Mikhail is one of founders of Mikhail Riches and has been responsible for Goldsmith Street for Norwich City Council, The Housing Delivery Programme for City of York Council and Owlstone Croft Graduate Homes for Queens’ College Cambridge. David also developed a slice of unpromising land at Church Walk Hackney, which went on to become the RIBA London Building of the Year 2013.

Phil Hamilton is a Director at Peter Barber Architects, which he joined in 2002, having worked with Nigel Coates previously. Phil has a wealth of planning and construction experience having led large multi discipline teams on multiple award-winning housing and mixed use projects. He is a member of the Hackney and Wandsworth Design Review Panels, and is a member of the RIBA National Awards Panel.

The series coincides with the new C20 book 100 21st Century Buildings (2026, Batsfords).
