Keith New: Master colourist and modernist
Keith New: Master colourist and modernist - Thursday 24th May 3pm to 7pm
Led by Diana Coulter and Robert Smith
Keith New (1926-2012), a vibrant modernist stained glass artist, was one of the three designers of the Coventry Cathedral nave windows. This tour showcases a range of his different commissions for London churches. It begins at St James-the-Less in Bethnal Green, with a ‘honeycomb’ west window of coloured and flashed glass. We will look at New’s striking designs in traditional stained glass at Wren’s St Nicholas Cole Abbey in the City. At St Stephen Walbrook we can view New’s initial design proposal, ‘the first glass in a modern idiom in a Wren church’ (subsequently removed). We finish at All Hallows by the Tower where New designed two small figurative lights for the 1960 baptistery.
The tour coincides with the publication of the first monograph devoted to this important artist-craftsman and concludes with the London book launch at All Hallows’, where copies will be available at a special price. The authors, Diana Coulter and Robert Smith, will be the guides and will answer questions over refreshments.
Meet promptly at 3pm at St James-the-Less (E2 9JD). By 3.30 we aim to catch a No. 8 bus to St Paul’s. At 4pm we will visit Cole Abbey (EC4V 4BJ, optional joining point with a café) and then Walbrook (EC4N 8BN) at 4.45 pm, before departing for All Hallows by the Tower (EC3R 5BJ). The book launch will start at 6pm once All Hallows has closed to the public.
