'F X Velarde Talk at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral
F X Velarde Talk at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral
Thursday 7th October 2021 at 6.00 pm
A free event although booking required, as seating is limited.
To celebrate the publication last year of 'F. X. Velarde' in the C20 Architects Monograph Series by Dominic Wilkinson, he will give a free talk about the architect in the Lutyens crypt of the cathedral. The book will be available to purchase at a special price.
The book brings together for the first time a comprehensive description of Velarde’s principal works, and places his projects in the context of an alternative form of European Modernism. Among the churches that will be discussed are: St Monica’s, Bootle (1936); English Martyrs, Wallasey (1953); and St Luke’s, Pinner (1957).
The talk will take place in the crypt of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral (RC) designed by Edwin Lutyens, built 1933-41. After the WW2 a new design for the cathedral by Frederick Gibberd was built 1962-67.
Copies of the book will be available to purchase at a special price and Dominic Wilkinson will sign copies.
The numbers of people in the crypt are limited to reflect the social distancing measures with the seating layout. Face masks are advised but not mandatory.
Dominic Wilkinson is a Principal Lecturer in Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University and author of 'F X Velarde' with Dr Andrew Crompton, Reader in Architecture Liverpool University.
If you are not able to visit Liverpool on 7 October you can view Dominic Wilkinson’s C20 F X Velarde talk of 15 October 2020 on YouTube.
