The Twentieth Century Society

Campaigning for outstanding buildings

ZOOM Event: Osbert Lancaster: from Byzantium to Pelvis Bay Talk

Osbert Lancaster: from Byzantium to Pelvis Bay

Thursday 1 December 2022 at 6.30pm

Online via Zoom.

Alan Powers will talk about the remarkable cartoonist, architectural historian, stage designer and author Osbert Lancaster (1908-1986).

Nobody has used humour to explain architecture as well as he did. The combination of drawings and text gave us irreplaceable names for the sub-styles of the twentieth century and much more besides.

Lancaster's Pillar to Post (1938) was described by Gavin Stamp as "one of the most influential books on architecture ever published – and certainly the funniest" (Anti-Ugly: Excursions in English Architecture and Design, 2013).

Alan Powers, former C20 Chairman and current trustee, has written extensively on architecture, art and design of the last 100 years. He is History Leader at the London School of Architecture.

There will be a display of a selection of Lancaster’s books.

C20 Society Members:  £ 4 Non-Members: £ 6

NOTE: This event is hybrid and is being run both in-person at Cowcross Street Gallery and online via Zoom. The event will not be recorded or offered as a catch-up lecture.
