Vauxhall and Nine Elms Walk
Vauxhall and Nine Elms Walk
Saturday 26 August 2023
Start time/place: 10.30am outside the main entrance to Vauxhall Underground Station under the large slanting canopy next to the bus station
Finish time/place: 12.30pm at Vauxhall Underground Station
Supposedly named in the C17 after a row of elm trees bordering a road between York House in Richmond and Vauxhall, Nine Elms is now a major redevelopment area. Battersea Power Station is at its western end, it was the site of the new Covent Garden Market in the 1970s and, until the early 2000s it was largely occupied by City and West End support service companies. It lies within two Council areas, Lambeth, and Wandsworth, and is now a cluster of high-rise residential buildings – some better than others. This tour will cover both recently completed projects and those currently under construction. Highlights are the new American Embassy, Embassy Gardens (and its controversial swimming pool), Riverlight by Richard Rogers, and St George Wharf and other buildings by AHMM, Allies & Morrison, Broadway Malyan, FCBS, GRID, Gort Scott, SOM, and other not so well-known practises. Note: the tour will not include Battersea Power Station.
Ian McInnes is an architect, author and former C20 trustee.
