Curator Tour of the ‘Wide-Angle View’ RIBA exhibition and RIBA Photographs Collection

Wednesday 20 March 2024

RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London W1B 1AD

Start time: 6pm Finish time: 7.30pm

Valeria Carullo, RIBA curator, will lead a tour of the RIBA exhibition ‘Wide-Angle View: architecture as social space in the Manplan series 1969-70’, followed by an exclusive visit to the RIBA Photographs Collection. The photographic exhibition focuses on the ‘Manplan’ editorial project, conceived by the Architectural Review as a survey of architecture and town planning in late 1960s Britain. The aim was to propose an alternative and more holistic approach, which would look at all basic human needs as a whole – hence the name ‘Manplan’. The series introduced a new type of architectural imagery, influenced by photojournalism and street photography, which often featured people as well as buildings – architecture was in fact no longer the main focus of the photographs but was instead depicted as a backdrop for human activities. While many of the themes addressed in the project are still relevant today, the exhibition also offers an opportunity for reflection on the role of the photographic image in the interpretation and communication of architecture.

The RIBA Photographs Collection is one of the largest and most comprehensive repositories of photographs of the built environment worldwide. Participants will be able to view a selection of highlights and the environmentally controlled store where the Collection is housed.

Valeria Carullo is the Curator of the RIBA Photographs Collection, and lead curator of ‘Wide-Angle View’. She regularly writes and lectures on architectural and photographic subjects, and has contributed to several events for the C20 Society.
