South Kensington Repeat Walk
South Kensington Walk
Saturday 16 March 2024. 10am-12pm
Start time/place: 10am – outside the RCA Kensington Gore entrance (facing the Royal Albert Hall)
Finish time/place: 12pm – outside South Kensington Underground Station
London’s district of South Kensington is renowned for its mesmerising Victorian streetscape, from world-famous museums to Sir George Gilbert Scott’s extravagant Albert Memorial. Drawing immense crowds throughout the year, these landmarks are uncontested poster children of the area. However, the architectural excellence of South Kensington spans much farther across time. Overshadowed by the nineteenth-century razzle-dazzle is its brilliant array of modernist and contemporary buildings, equally striking and splendid.
This tour will take in the diverse cast of 20th- and 21st-century architecture in South Kensington, spotlighting classic heavy hitters and recently completed projects. An extended version of last year’s South Kensington tour, this walk will set off from H. T. Cadbury-Brown’s Royal College of Art. Highlights will include the Norman and Dawbarn (1950s) and Foster + Partners (present-day) expansions of Imperial College London, including the Grade II listed Weeks Hall by Sheppard Robson and Partners; new extensions to the Natural History Museum (Feilden Fowles); the V&A (AL_A); and more. The second half of the tour will include a special visit to the interiors of Casson Conder Partnership’s Ismaili Centre.
The tour will be led by Carlos Finlay and Chunyi Sun (Cy). Carlos is a heritage consultant at Alan Baxter & Assocs. Cy is a third year architecture student at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, and an illustrator.
