Start time/place: 5.30pm/British Hotel, Douglas (IM1 4LB)

Finish time/place: 6pm/Terminus Tavern, Douglas (IM2 4NR)

Join Andrew Jackson in the Isle of Man for a weekend inspired by the recently published Pevsner guide, looking not only at twentieth century architecture but also at some significant Victorian contributions to the Island’s rich built heritage (including work by Frank Matcham and M H Baillie Scott).

Friday evening there will be a group dinner at the British Hotel, Douglas. Special guest and author of the Isle of Man Pevsner, Jonathan Kewley, will talk on ‘The Lemon Squeezer and Other Stories: An Introduction to Manx Architecture of the Long Twentieth Century’. Please note that accommodation is not available at the British Hotel.

Saturday begins by boarding the Isle of Man Steam Railway for the journey south to Port Erin, as the line celebrates its 150th anniversary, before stopping at nearby Castletown for a buffet lunch. An afternoon walking tour of Douglas will take in a number of buildings, including the spectacular Sea Terminal (Davidson Marsh, 1961-5). A variety of establishments can be found in Douglas for evening dining.

Sunday starts at the Palace Hotel (Richard Seifert & Partners, 1965-6) for a morning looking at housing projects in Douglas. The Manx Electric Railway will then be taken north towards Ramsey, stopping for Sunday lunch at Laxey - home to the Laxey Wheel of 1854, which will be seen after lunch. A walking tour of Ramsey follows, including a visit to Our Lady Star of the Sea & St Maughold (Giles Gilbert Scott, 1909-12), before the evening tram back to Douglas.

Andrew Jackson is a trustee of C20 Society and Civic Voice. He regularly leads weekend tours for the Society and dedicates this event to Elain Harwood, who had been looking forward to returning to the Isle of Man with the new Pevsner.
