Surrey Docks Walk: The LDDC Legacy

Surrey Docks Walk: The LDDC Legacy

Saturday 27 April 2024

Start time/place: 10.30am/Dockers’ Shelter, Redriff Road, London, SE16 2LW close to Surrey Quays Station

Finish time/place: 12.30pm/Canada Water Library, close to Canada Water Station

A morning walk led by Philip Downer will explore the buildings of Greenland and South Docks, including the Grade II listed Swedish Quays by David Price and Gordon Cullen, Baltic Quay by Lister Drew Haines Barrow, and Greenland Passage by Kjaer & Richter with Macintosh Haines & Kennedy.

We will travel inland to the Bermondsey Borough’s 1930s Redriff Estate, and take in The Lakes by Shepheard Epstein Hunter, and Wolfe Crescent by CZWG, as well as plenty of less iconic developments. We will ponder “toytown” architecture, wonder whether big housebuilders can do PoMo, and enjoy the incorporation of elements of the old dock system into the new district. We will take in the view of Cascades and its neighbours across the river, then climb Stave Hill for a comprehensive panorama of London and consider the impact that the Canada Water masterplan (British Land with Allies & Morrison and others) will have on the 1980s legacy.

Philip Downer’s career in retail belies his long-standing fascination with the built environment in London and elsewhere, which he captures daily on his Instagram account philip.downer. Philip lived in Rotherhithe 1987-92, and enjoyed a ringside seat at the development of the peninsula.

C20 Members:  £15  Non-members: £20

In the event of a Met Office weather warning, or severe weather, the walk will be reschedule.
