Zoom: Advertising Architects: The Architectural Review
Advertising Architects: The Architectural Review
Friday 4 October 2024 at 6.30pm
Dr Jessica Kelly will look at how The Architectural Review in the mid-twentieth century publicised and promoted architects and architecture for a public audience.
Before 1986 registered architects in Britain were not permitted to advertise their services under the Royal Institute of British Architect’s code of practice. This ban on advertising was a way of distinguishing the gentlemanly profession of architect from the overtly entrepreneurial activities of the construction industry. Advertising was what separated architects from builders. And yet architecture was a commercial enterprise and architects were reliant on clients and patrons to finance their work.
Media, such as architectural magazines, exhibitions and later radio and television, took on the work of advertising architects to potential clients. The promotional function of the media has been overlooked because it contradicted the etiquette and regulations of the architectural profession, but this talk will demonstrate how important magazines like The Architectural Review were for advertising architects.
Dr Jessica Kelly is Reader in Architectural and Design History at London Metropolitan University.
