Berlin and Bauhaus

Thursday 29 May to Sunday 1 June 2025

Start time/place: 1pm/ Amerika Haus, Hardenburgstrasse 22-24, 106234 Berlin, near Zoologischegarten

Finish time/place: tbc/ Central Berlin

The four-day tour led by Alan Powers includes a full day in Dessau, home of the Bauhaus from 1925 to 1932, where there are many immaculately restored original buildings, and a museum opened in 2019 for the centenary of the famous school. In Berlin, we put the Bauhaus in context, looking at work by precursors and contemporaries, including former staff and pupils.

Thursday starts with an afternoon walking tour of the centre of Berlin, including works by Erich Mendelsohn, Egon Eiermann, and others; and finishing at the Werkbund Archive Museum of Things ‘Open Archive’ display at Leipziger Straße 54.

Friday a coach tour to Dessau for the Bauhaus building, the Masters’ Houses and the Törten Estate (1926-8), all designed by Walter Gropius, finishing at the new Bauhaus Museum (2019) Addenda Architects.

Saturday back in Berlin begins with a visit to Bernau and the former Trade Union School (1928-30) designed by Hannes Meyer, and a further walking tour of the western suburbs including Onkel Toms Hütte housing (1926-32) designed by Bruno Taut and others, with group dinner (optional – pay per person) at local restaurant.

Sunday a morning’s walking tour to see Behrens’ Turbine Building (1909) followed by the Hansaviertel housing (1957-61) by Aalto, Eiermann, Gropius, Niemeyer, and others. Finishes 1pm, but add-on visit options available .

Alan Powers, is former C20 Chairman and current trustee, and has written extensively on architecture, art and design of the last 100 years. He is History Leader at the London School of Architecture. His book ‘Bauhaus Goes West’ was published in 2019.
