Spring Lecture Series 2025: Great Exhibitions of the Twentieth Century:
4. Dancing on the Volcano: Decoration at The Paris 1925 and 1937 Expositions, Leslie Klingner
Thursday 20 February 2025 at 6.30pm
The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London, EC1M 6EJ
Between the shadows and gathering clouds of war, two international exhibitions held in Paris focussed on decoration. Visitors revelled amidst displays of consumer goods and the rival architectural idioms of the pavilions built to house them. These wonders also embodied the volatile local, national and international geopolitics of the troubled 1920s and 30s. Individual luxury, collective environments, and technological futures imagined fragile hopes for prosperity, power and peace; leitmotifs still resonant at the 2025 centenary.
