Spring Lecture Series 2025: Great Exhibitions of the Twentieth Century:
5. Batting for Britain: National Representation in International Exhibitions, 1900 to 1992, Alan Powers
Thursday 27 February 2025 at 6.30pm
The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London, EC1M 6EJ
The conventional view of British pavilions at international exhibitions is that they reflected the slow and often embarrassing emergence of a modern approach to design but were still hampered by nostalgia. Alan Powers will explore a sequence of these representational spaces to chart the interplay of officialdom and creativity in developing a sense of modernity within tradition and a useable past.
Alan Powers is a former Chairman of the Twentieth Century Society and Master of the Art Workers’ Guild. He has published widely on art, architecture and design since 1900, with books including Bauhaus Goes West, 2019 and monographs on Serge Chermayeff, Eric Ravilious and Enid Marx. He co-edits the journal Twentieth Century Architecture and the monograph series Twentieth Century Architects, both produced under the aegis of the C20 Society.
