6. Inside the Millennium Dome: Remembering the Exhibition 25 years on, Paul Pope
Friday 7 March 2025 at 6.30pm
Online
It has been 25 years since the Millennium Dome exhibition, a landmark event that opened on 1 January 2000. Purpose-built to host the Millennium Experience, the iconic dome-shaped building featured interactive zones, cutting-edge technology, and bold artistic installations. The exhibition offered visitors a unique and immersive journey through 14 themed zones, exploring aspects of human life such as ‘who we are,’ ‘what we do,’ and ‘where we live.’
In this talk, Paul Pope revisits The Millennium Experience through a series of original photographs, capturing the essence of an exhibition that—though only open for a single year—left a lasting impact on all who visited. Despite initial controversies, the exhibition and its legacy still evoke a sense of connection to time and place, underscoring the importance of shared spaces in shaping well-being and identity.
Dr Paul Pope is a documentary photographer and Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Birmingham, combining his expertise in human behaviour with visual storytelling. His practice explores contemporary psychological issues—such as the impact of social media, technology, and environment on well-being and identity—enhanced by his ability to use photography to illustrate and understand these current themes.
