Carlo Scarpa in Veneto Study Tour (C20 Members only)

Wednesday 1 to Saturday 4 October 2025

Start time/place:  2pm/Piazzale Roma, Venice.

Finish time/place: 1.30pm/Padiglione Centrale, Venice Biennale, Giardini dell’Accademia, Venice.

Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) is considered one of the most important figures of Italian 20th century modernism and his work has been acclaimed internationally. Renowned for his love of crafts and understanding of materials, he was heavily influenced by the heritage of his city, Venice, as well as that of Japan.

The tour led by Valeria Carullo (read her article on Scarpa in the current C20 Magazine) will include all Scarpa’s most important projects in the Veneto: in Venice the highlights will be his pavilions at the Biennale Gardens (1950-56), the Olivetti Showroom (1957-58) and the Querini Stampalia Foundation (1961-65), and we will also have access to the interiors he designed for the University of Venice in two palaces on the Grand Canal.

In Verona we will visit the renowned Castelvecchio Museum (Scarpa’s interventions 1958-74), while another trip out of town will take us to the Gypsotheca Antonio Canova in Possagno (1955-57) and the Brion Tomb in San Vito d'Altivole (1968-78).

The tour will end at the Giardini della Biennale, where participants will be able to visit this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale (ticket included in the price of the tour).
