Campaigning for outstanding buildings

C20 AGM Walk - Duchy of Cornwall Estate

Duchy of Cornwall Estate Walk -  Saturday 17th June 2017

Led by Alan Powers

Soon after the future Edward VIII became Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall in 1910, his private secretary, Sir Walter Peacock, proposed a substantial rebuilding of the Duchy estate in Kennington, selecting the architects S. D. Adshead and S. C. Ramsey. When their first sequence of buildings was completed in 1913-14, they received much publicity owing to the lightness of touch in their late Georgian style and the equally eighteenth century formations of crescent, square and an enclosed quadrangle of old people’s housing. The project continued with the church of  St. Anselm after the war, and further buildings by Louis de Soissons and his successors. Intermingled with buildings of earlier and later date, this is a distinctive area of London still largely under Duchy ownership.

Meet time/place: 2.00 pm St. Paul’s Lorrimore Square, London, SE17 3QU following C20 Society AGM
