The Twentieth Century Society

Campaigning for outstanding buildings

Beckenham Beckons - FULLY BOOKED

Beckenham Beckons -  Saturday 22nd July 1.30pm to 6pm - FULLY BOOKED

Led by Ian McInnes & Glenys Crane

Some of the most interesting mid century modern housing in the country can be found in leafy suburban Beckenham. A late 1950s master plan, prepared by Anthony Chitty for the Cator Estate, the largest local land owner, set out a strategy for the redevelopment of the old Victorian villas on many of the roads west of the station. A number of housing developers like Span, Wren and Lyon Estates, as well as small local builders, took advantage of it. Our comprehensive tour of the area includes access to three of the most interesting house types. We will also have a chance to look at the art deco buildings in Beckenham's High Street, the best 1930s church in Bromley (according to Pevsner), and a fine brick streamlined modern former post office.

Meet time/place: Outside the ticket office at Beckenham Junction Station at 1.30pm (Beckenham High Street nearby has a wide range of pubs, coffee bars & restaurants if you arrive early, and Kelsey Park is also worth a visit).

Members Only: £18.00
