Ljubljana – Plečnik and More - Thursday 12th April to Sunday 15th April 2018
Led by: Catherine Croft, Director of C20, with Cela Selley and Thaddeus Zupancic
Join the c20 tour to the Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, which will take place between Thursday 12th and Sunday 15th April, 2018. The city has a wealth of 20th century architecture of all periods and styles from Viennese Secession through to Brutalism, but is most known for the architecture and city planning of Joze Plečnik.
Maks Fabiani, who worked for Otto Wagner in Vienna, introduced the Viennese Secession style to Ljubljana as well as designing an integral city plan. After WW1 Slovenia became part of Yugoslavia and Jose Plečnik, having trained with Wagner, and then worked in Prague, returned to his home country where he focussed on the urban planning of the city, both land and water. Plečnik used classical elements in his architecture, but in a highly original way and we will see his buildings, churches, bridges, parks, and interventions throughout this walkable city.
Ljubljana also possesses its Skyscraper, built in 1933; it was at the time the ninth tallest building in Europe.
After WWII, Edvard Ravnikar, who studied under both Plečnik and Le Corbusier, designed a number of residential neighbourhoods, and the Republic Square complex – (1961-74 and 1982-3), opposite the 1959 People’s Assembly – now the national Parliament building. Our tour will take us to all these areas and will also include a guided tour of Plečnik’s house; talks on Ravnikar and Plečnik; entrance to Parliament, castle and other buildings; a group dinner; and a boat trip to explore Plečnik’s planning of the River Ljubljanica river basin.
The tour will start at 6.15pm on Thursday evening for a short orientation walk. Friday and Saturday will involve walking tours, with a boat trip and group dinner on Friday, and entrance to the castle on Saturday. On Sunday we will visit the outskirts of the city by coach.
We recommend the Easyjet flight from London Stansted on Thursday 12th April which arrives at 1610. Transfers by shuttle bus can be booked with for around 10 Euros. Taxis are also available. Buses run once an hour. The coach will return to the airport by 3.00pm on Sunday 15th April to enable participants to catch the 1645 Easyjet flight to London Stansted.
