Women Artists and the Modern Church in Britain lecture by Dr Ayla Lepine

Wednesday 4th April 2018 6.30pm to 8pm

From the turn of the twentieth century to the present, women have produced diverse and complex works of art for and in response to the church. This talk explores the relationship between Christian sacred spaces, from vast and well-known cathedrals to rural chapels, and women artists in a period in which feminism, culture, and Christianity engaged in new dialogues. Artists including Winifred Knights, Elizabeth Frink, Enid Chadwick and Tracey Emin have encouraged the church to include women and express sacramental theology in ways that continue to inspire and challenge.

Dr Ayla Lepine is Visiting Fellow in Art History at the University of Essex.

Lectures on Wednesday 4th April and Monday 23rd April are jointly presented by The Twentieth Century Society and Art and Christianity
