Campaigning for outstanding buildings

Chingford: A Suburb of London

Chingford: A Suburb of London - Saturday 30th June
2.00pm to 5.30pm led by: John Goodier

Chingford is situated between the marshy River Lea and Epping Forest and for much of its history consisted of isolated farms, and later some large private houses. Chingford started developing in the 19th Century with the arrival of the railway and became a County town. It continues to develop. This walk looks mainly at infrastructure – churches, shops, public service buildings, open spaces. A variety of housing types will be seen from the outside. We will have sight of two of the largest constructions ever seen on a C20 walk. The walk will illustrate some of the changes in the focus of the town, and of individual buildings. We are hoping to gain entry to a few buildings.

Meet time/place: 2.00pm outside Chingford station (facilities on Chingford station platform, and at the end of the walk
Finish time: Approximately 5.30pm on Chingford Mount, buses back to Chingford Station and to Walthamstow are available
Members price: £12 Non members:  £16
